“A few years ago, I was walking through Surry Hills. It was mid-morning, sunny with strong shadows. I saw a pink truck in a laneway, and it immediately grabbed my attention. I knew I had to paint it. So, I did. This led me to noticing all things pink.”- Sally West

Here at KAB Gallery, we are lucky enough to hold a one-of-a-kind, extensive collection of the beautiful original oil works of Sally West. A hidden gem within this collection is undoubtedly Sally’s breakaway assortment of oil studies, the “PINK” series. It is not uncommon for Sally to paint streetscapes, and she often captures the streets that snake around some of Sydney and the Central Coast’s best beaches. What sets this series apart, however, is the common denominator between them, being the splash of pale pink! Sally aimed to capture these rare splashes of pink that are dappled throughout Sydney, and curate her own collection of pieces that almost act like data organisation. Any time she witnessed a pink vehicle, be it a car, van or an ice cream truck, Sally would capture the scene and render it often in a small, intricate study on canvas or oil paper. Just like a game of Spotto… but make it pink!

Each original work holds its own character. The colour palette is not only the element that beautifully ties each piece together in the series, but the inclusion of pink pigment beautifully enhances each individual work, distinguishing them from her usual beachscapes and landscapes. Sally expertly mixes the perfect shade of pale pink. Upon application, the colour seamlessly suits the other pale hues but also is masterfully applied to contrast any harsher or deeper tones throughout the composition as well. The viewer of the series undertakes an exciting process of weaving in and out of the series’ planes to spot the pink vehicle, just as Sally did on the streets of Sydney. The overarching philosophy, here, is documenting and displaying the hidden gems of our daily life. Capturing and appreciate the beauty within everyday is an important conceptual factor of this series.

The series can be broken down into three groups, the oil paper studies, miniature canvas works (sized 25x25cm) and the feature pieces (sized 100×100 and 90x120cm). All distinctively featuring ice cream trucks and other pale pink vehicles. The series is effortlessly linked aesthetically. The pieces can be easily displayed together, as the stylistic qualities of each piece, being Sally’s gorgeous impasto application of pigment, means that one can make their own series, diptych or triptych by picking their favourites from this special collection.
