Sydney’s popular beach shorelines is where Sally West, a renowned Australian artist, has found her muse. Known for her dedication to the plein air painting technique, West skillfully uses a palette knife and oil paint to create homages to popular Sydney and NSW beaches on her canvas. Her textured style is perfect for the coastal scenes, giving added dimension to the surf, overlapping waves, sand and beachgoers. This textured and almost abstract painting style has become a coveted trademark of her popular Beach Series. These paintings by Sally West illustrate an unmistakable Australian beach vibe and culture.
A few years ago, Sally West turned her focus to Freshwater Beach—colloquially known as “Freshy”—a popular beach gem nestled along Sydney’s Northern Beaches. It was here that her internationally celebrated Beach Series began. Painting en plein air from a rock platform, West captured the perfect aerial perspective of Freshwater Beach, overlooking surfers and swimmers as she worked. This unique vantage point allowed her to bring a new aspect to her art, capturing the dynamic interaction between the shores and the surf.

Over the past few summers, Sally West’s Beach Series has evolved, with each new painting offering a fresh perspective on Australia’s iconic beaches. This year, West is expanding her portfolio to include famous beach locations such as Avoca Beach, Lizzie Beach, Manly, Coogee, Maroubra, Bondi, Terrigal, Balmoral, and Blueys Beach. Whether she’s working on a small oil on oil paper study or a large, nearly three-metre-wide canvas, the scenes are all created with her unique impasto technique and style. One of the most anticipated pieces is a diptych made up of two very large canvases. West has meticulously crafted the diptych in a way that the coastlines span continuously across the two canvases perfectly. It is a great painting to position on a wide wall space.
The Beach Series by Sally West is in a constant state of flux, with new artworks being added regularly. These paintings are available exclusively at KAB Gallery, where you can view and purchase original, one-of-a-kind works straight from Sally West’s easel. Unlike many contemporary artists, West does not permit prints of her work, ensuring that each piece remains unique and highly collectable. The series includes coveted original oil studies, offering a peek into the artist’s creative process.
