There’s something truly beautiful about the beach in winter. The high surf, foamy waves crashing against the shore, and the moody, overcast sky create a scene that’s both powerful and serene. Today, as I stood on Terrigal Beach with my camera in hand, I was struck by the raw beauty of the day — the kind of beauty that Australian artist Sally West captures so perfectly in her beach paintings, all of which are available for sale at KAB Gallery Terrigal, your premier Central Coast Art Gallery.
The Central Coast in Impasto Styled Paint – Sally West Style
Sally West is celebrated for her ability to bring the Australian coastline to life in thick impasto paint. Her unique artworks from the Beach Series, showcased at KAB Gallery Terrigal, reflect the ever-changing moods of the ocean and beach. As I looked at her beach paintings in the art gallery this afternoon, I couldn’t help but notice how beautiful the winter scenes are and just how perfectly they echoed the scene before me on Terrigal Beach today—the grey, overcast skies and the deeper colour tones of the winter sea.
The Winter Coastline in Sally West’s Art
Sally West paints all year round and is committed to her en plein air (on location in the outdoors) process. She travels out and braves all sorts of weather and coastal locations. She once tackled the Killcare beach scene during a memorable Cyclone Debbie. This cyclone event was one-of-a-kind and she had to seek shelter at the Killcare Surf Club to complete the painting overlooking the incredibly moving scene. She says to me “what was I thinking?!”. The painting fantastic though, something a local art collector would be able to really cherish and enjoy.
This is one of Sally West’s most striking pieces from the beach series. Her depiction of the cyclone scene is unlike any other, where the cool tones of the water blend seamlessly with the muted colours of the sand. She illustrates the high surf with so much thick oil paint to show the wild energy of the waves and powerful winds. Not quite as rough as the ones I photographed today but their foamy crests swirling against a backdrop of grey skies are lively nonetheless. Overall though, there is a unique use of deeper blues and greens of the ocean in this fabulous painting which mirror the wintery hues that coloured Terrigal Beach this afternoon, adding a sense of depth and unusual beauty to the scene.
Other winter paintings with a calmer winter mood offer a different type of appeal. These ones remind me of coastal walks rugged up in jumpers and waterproof parkers with hot chocolates or coffees in-hand. Just like the couple walking in the foreground of my photo today – it isn’t the most pleasant of walks but it’s always invigorating and completely worth the effort nonetheless!
