Terri the Seal: The Adorable Visitor Everyone is Talking About at Terrigal Beach

If you’ve visited Terrigal over the past couple of weeks, chances are you’ve heard someone ask, “Have you seen the seal yet?”

Affectionately known as Terri, the young Subantarctic fur seal has quietly become part of daily life at Terrigal Beach, bringing smiles to locals and visitors alike.

Terri was first spotted resting near The Haven, where many of us assumed we had simply been lucky enough to witness a fleeting visit before he disappeared back out to sea. People stopped for a few moments, admired him from a respectful distance and carried on with their day, expecting he would soon continue his journey.

Instead, Terri decided to stay.

The following day he was spotted enjoying the sunshine on the sand near the Terrigal Surf Club, where crowds gathered throughout the day to catch a glimpse of our unexpected visitor.

Since then, he has made himself comfortable closer to the Terrigal Rockpool, happily resting, stretching, scratching and occasionally cooling off with a gentle swim in the shallows before returning to his favourite spot on the beach.

What has been especially lovely is watching the community respond.

Every day, people have travelled from near and far to see Terri for themselves. Almost every visitor to KAB Gallery has mentioned him, often arriving with photos on their phone or excitedly sharing that they had just seen him resting peacefully on the beach.

Despite the growing interest, the overwhelming majority of visitors have shown remarkable respect for Terri’s space. Families quietly watch from a distance, photographers patiently wait for the perfect moment and children excitedly point him out while learning why wild animals need space to rest.

A special thank you must also go to the incredible volunteers from ORRCA, together with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Central Coast Council, who have been taking turns throughout the day to help protect Terri, answer questions and educate visitors about the importance of leaving seals undisturbed. They are also monitoring a cookie cutter shark bite he has and an eye condition. They have explained that seals are very resilient but they are keeping a careful watch. 

Their calm presence has helped create an environment where people can enjoy this wonderful wildlife encounter while ensuring Terri remains safe, relaxed and free to continue doing exactly what he came ashore to do, rest.

As if Terri hadn’t already left enough of an impression on our little seaside town, he has also inspired one of KAB Gallery’s represented artists.

Australian artist Kelly-Anne Love has created an original painting celebrating Terri’s visit to Terrigal. Full of warmth, personality and her unmistakable style, the artwork captures the gentle charm that has made this young seal such a favourite with our community.

The painting is currently being professionally framed and will soon arrive at KAB Gallery Terrigal. We can’t wait to share it with everyone who has enjoyed following Terri’s story.

Sometimes the most memorable moments aren’t planned.

A young seal decides to rest on our beach for a little while, and before long an entire community is smiling, slowing down and taking a moment to appreciate the remarkable wildlife that shares our coastline.

We hope Terri enjoys the rest he needs and, when the time comes, has a safe journey back out to sea.
