Unfolding Views by Penelope Oates is a six panel folding screen made up of six original artworks, designed to be experienced both as individual scenes and as one continuous landscape.
The composition moves from mountains and cascading water at the top through to dense Australian bushland below, creating a clear sense of depth and progression. The landscape is directly inspired by the Dharug Country (NSW), with Oates referencing its rugged terrain, native vegetation and wildlife. Look closely to see the native Australian Lyrebird and waterbirds.
Her mixed media technique allows for fine etched detail alongside softer, atmospheric misty touches, giving the work both structure and subtle movement. Each panel connects naturally to the next, while still holding its own as a resolved artwork.
As a traditional screen, the piece offers flexibility in how it is displayed. It can function as a room divider or be positioned as a feature artwork, with the ability to adjust the angle and view depending on the space.

Our new Neutral Bay gallery is a large, beautifully designed space filled with incredible original artworks from Australia's leading contemporary artists. Visitors are always welcome to drop in and explore, or collectors can schedule a private appointment for artwork appraisals, valuations, or restoration assessments. We'd love to show you around — use the directions below and come experience the new KAB Gallery Sydney.
Free parking is conveniently located at the rear of Theo's Arcade next to Coles. Take the escalator where you can step off and into the doors of KAB Galley.
