Australian artist Sally West paints with her signature textured oil paintings at all the best beaches here in Australia. Famously loved for her en plein air technique, she works on-site and recreates the energy and beauty of the day with impasto oil daubs and strokes. Her latest collection of coastal paintings has just arrived at KAB Gallery, offering collectors an exclusive opportunity to select their favourites now and own these unique pieces.

This artwork was created on the day of Sydney’s biggest heatwave! Sally West seized the opportunity to paint such a unique crowd and beach ambiance. As a skilled and experienced en plein air painter she was prepared to avoid heatstroke.

Painting the Coast: Sally West’s En Plein Air Technique

Sally West’s creative process is as dynamic as the beaches she paints. Setting up her easel directly on cliff tops, grassy knolls or directly in the sand, she works outdoors in natural light, immersing herself in the sights, sounds, and sensations of the beach locations. This en plein air method allows her to create true representations of the day which cant ever be recreated. While she may paint from teh vantage point a few time, no two paintings will ever be the same because she is painting from life rather than a photograph or memory. Using thick, textured layers of oil paint, Sally’s impasto style brings the weather of the day, movement of the ocean and the softness of the sand to the canvas.

Over the years, Freshwater Beach and Bondi Beach have been a particularly special locations for Sally. Situated on Sydney’s northern coastline, Freshwater is known for its surfing history, huge waves, and the most beautiful gold coloured sands. It’s a beach close to her heart, and her paintings are always perfect from her “hot rock” position. As you can see in the above photo, even in a heatwave it is great! Bondi Beach is consistently visually gorgeous and full of energy – something incredible happens there on every paint out day! The crowds on the sands and shoreline water offer so much colour and extra inclusions for the paintings. It’s easy to see what they are so popular amongst collectors.

  • ‘Morning Light at Terrigal’: This artwork depicts the warm light of the late morning shining over Terrigal Beach, with soft hues and textured strokes that evoke a sense of summer. At around noon through to 1.20pm it can be too hot for beachgoers to stay on the hot sands so the late morning offers a scene with a full crowd of sunbakers, swimmers and surfers along with the gorgeous warm light over the scene. As our gallery is located here in Terrigal Beachfront, we may be biased but we are so taken with this one! It’s is fabulous and the vantage is very unique too. We can’t wait to see who buys this one and where they will hang it! View details and purchase here.
