For those of you unfamiliar with Laurie’s work, she has a fascinating story. Originally from Toronto, Canada, her creativity sparked in her early years. Initially inspired by her grandmother’s who was a stylish seamstress. McKern spent countless childhood hours surrounded by beautiful fabrics, fashion cuts, and drawing. Laurie’s early exposure to textiles and nostalgic imagery has clearly influenced her style, which she describes as “romantic, modern-vintage figurative paintings.” After working in graphics and illustration, Laurie made the bold move to transition into painting full-time after relocating to Sydney in the 1990s.

Her upcoming exhibition at KAB Gallery Sydney Pineapple Safari will include a series of stunning works created on various fabrics including African ‘toile de jouy’ fabric, featuring tigers, elephants, and other striking elements that evoke an added sense of adventure.
