Mural for Crowne Plaza Terrigal by Simon Sawell
In preparation for the 2017 5 lands walk Simon Sawell has been collaborating with his creative colleagues (Kevin & Paul) to create a unique mural for Terrigal’s Crowne Plaza Hotel. Positioned at the main entry of the hotel this large scale work is a contemporary representation about the creative people of past and present in Terrigal.
The mural is inspired by the annual 5 Lands Walk event where people of the Central Coast come together to walk the 10km + track from MacMasters Beach to Terrigal with the intent to “connect people to people and people to place.” A popular event for the Central Coast with over 12,000 participants.
It’s a day-long festival celebrating the 5 lands of the Darkinjung Country and the spectacle of our coastline. There are many activities, entertainment including up to 40 top Australian artists who set themselves up along the coastline to paint en plein air. KAB Gallery is a proud sponsor. It is a great opportunity for visitors to see the artists work and have a chat to them about their art.
Last year, Kasey Sealey was one of those artists on Terrigal Beach “What attracts me to the Terrigal landscape and this picture, are the highlights hitting the rock face and the translucent shadows” he said.
Sally West set her easel to face the Terrigal Haven view and with her distinct style of thick applications of oil paints. The changing of light and shadows pushed her to work fast. This year Sally West will be painting along side Simon Sawell at Copacabana Beach. This position is known to be difficult for artists as it is an exposed location with strong winds.
Simon Sawell is planning to work on several pieces throughout the day. He will be sketching, painting and using mixed medias to capture the view. He is hoping for good weather for the best result.
To end the day, all the artists will come together with their completed paintings to celebrate. Crowne Plaza Terrigal host a mini exhibition which welcomes artists to show each other their art, critique, and discuss their plein air experience.
You can visit the exhibition when it moves to the Crowne Plaza Terrigal in November. Subscribe to the KAB Gallery newsletter and we will notify you when its open for viewing. All artworks will be available for purchase too (both at the exhibition and online at KABGallery.com )
