Created on location at Bangaloe, Central Coast NSW.

I was drawn to make paintings of Bangaloe, (Pickett’s Valley, Central Coast) since I was generally attracted to the beauty and solitude of the landscape. In particular, I was taken by the lily pond and Japanese bridge, not least because it evoked memories and similarities with Monet’s wonderful garden, which he created at Giverny in France and which too famously features hilly ponds and green Japanese bridge – a huge inspiration for his paintings in his later years and which reflect his love of Japanese art. It was impossible not to think of his work when looking out over the tranquil surfaces of the lily pond here at Bangaloe with it’s own curved bridge. Furthermore, as I painted the view several times, I noticed the linear qualities of the trees around the pond, whose branches scribble out against the blue sky. I could equate therm with the sinuous lines of Japanese prints, which also fascinated Monet and which feature on many of the walls in his house at Giverny. I have visited his house and gardens on several occasions and one particular highlight is his kitchen, with beautiful copper pots and pans against the blue and white tiles. I can imagine him and his wife having family get togethers here, and probably no more so than on Christmas Eve.
