Artist Penelope Oates’ Portal Through Time offers a glimpse through the window of the SS Merimbula, a coastal passenger and cargo vessel shipwrecked near the Beecroft Peninsula in 1928. Oates creates a sense of foreboding in the moonlit, atmospheric scene, which references a tragic incident in Australian maritime history. Portal Through Time is also an homage to the perilous beauty of the sea, which serves as a dramatic metaphor for the tumult of history.

This exceptional piece was created with Oates’ signature technique, applying acrylic and ink paint to a circular, wooden board. The artwork features a raised border, emulating the protrusion of a naval vessel’s window.
