From the artist, Penelope Oates:
“Last year I travelled and spent time sketching and photographing outback NSW for an exhibition this year. The expanse of the desert with its red earth and unending sky was just as alluring in the daytime as it was at night. I was able to spend an evening at the Broken Hill Astronomy looking through a high-powered telescope at the Milky Way, from this experience I became fascinated with stories of Min Min lights. Reported in several outback regions, they appear after dark and are described as fuzzy disks or glowing orbs that changed in size, brightness, colouration and they seem to hover silently above the horizon.
The true origin of the name Min Min is shrouded in doubt with assertions that it could be connected to Indigenous language from the Conclurry area or to the Min Min Hotel, where the light was observed by a stockman in 1918.
Oral traditions of Indigenous Australians describe eerie lights that increased in numbers during early conflicts with the first Europeans. The lights, according to some stories, were vengeful spirits that could not rest because they needed justice for their murders. For the indigenous people, such spirits were frightening and could take a human’s life.
Whether these lights are a Mogana mirage caused by changes in atmosphere or car headlights, anecdotal sightings of them are an intriguing part of the mythology of the outback and one that is easy to be drawn into when you spend time in the outback.”
