Sally West is a popular contemporary Australian artist known for her richly textured paintings and commitment to the tradition of plein air painting. Her works are created with an incredibly thick impasto technique that gives the surface a buttery appeal and a sense of depth and movement. West uses a predominantly muted palette applying thick oil paint with a palette knife. Her bold sweeping gestures often spill over the edges of the canvas creating a beautiful feature.
A winner of several art prizes and a regular finalist in many others including the Portia Geach Art Prize (SH Ervin Gallery), New South Wales Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize, Paddington Art Prize (2016), KAAF Prize (2016), EMSLA (2016), Salon Des Refuses (Wynne) Prize, Charlatan Ink Art Prize (Manhattan NYC), and the Pacific Palms Art Prize (winner 3 years), Gosford Art Prize, Mosman Art Prize (2019), Hornsby Art Prize and many more.
Sally West’s most recent body of work from her beach series was painted inspired by and often created at various Australian beaches including Terrigal, Avoca, Freshwater, Manly, Coogee, Maroubra, Bondi, Camp Cove, Blueys, Lizzie & North Curl Curl (NSW).
