Andy Collis is a contemporary Australian painter and experienced art academic, working across portraiture, still life and landscape painting genres. A traditional portrait painter at heart, he places strong importance on working from life, valuing the time, observation and connection built between artist and sitter. This tradition applies to his still life and landscape works often painting from life and en plein air.
Alongside his portrait practice, Collis has developed a recognisable body of colourful landscape works, including his well-known “Colour Layer” series. These paintings are built through layered pigments and gestural application, resulting in bold, contemporary artworks suited to modern interiors. This series has proven highly popular with collectors and continues to attract both local and international interest. Born in Nottingham, UK, Collis has lived and worked in Australia since 1989 and is now based on the Central Coast, NSW. He has exhibited extensively throughout the UK and Australia, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, and held a long-standing career as a senior lecturer in Painting, Drawing and Art History.
