Still Waters in Paint

While all of the paintings are equally impressive, I am highlighting her diptych titled “Still Waters” in this article. This chic original oil painting comprises two individually framed canvases, each measuring 45.5×45.5cm and set in a luxe midnight black frame. When hung side-by-side, the canvases seamlessly match, depicting the fluid nature of water with her thorough focus on light reflections and rippling details.

Cathryn McEwen is a Canadian born artist now based on the East Coast of NSW, Australia. She loves painting light and finds herself focused on subjects highlighting either water reflections or shimmering glass bottles. Breaking down water’s visual elements, she emphasises colour, shape, and the light in a contemporary style. The diptych captures the organic flow of the water surface with it’s reflections and light play. The finish is part abstract and part realism which adds to the broad appeal of her work.

Cathryn McEwen’s art is currently showing at Gosford Regional Gallery & Edogawa Commemorative Garden as a FINALIST in the 2024 Gosford Art Prize. The exhibition runs through September and the gallery is located on the shores of Caroline Bay in East Gosford (36 Webb Street, East Gosford NSW). The Gosford Regional Gallery is one of the Central Coast’s leading tourist attractions which also provides an important cultural and educational resource for our local community.
