KAB Gallery is proud to congratulate Sally West on another art prize announcement! Her painting “Caravan and Amenities Block at El Lago Waters” has been announced as a 2015 Finalist in the NSW Parliament En Plein Air Prize. When speaking with Sally about the great news she said she was “over the moon”.
The NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize is an acquisitive art prize of $20,000, awarded for the best ‘plein air’ painting of a NSW subject. The NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize is an annual event and is recognised by plein air artists throughout Australia. The Parliament of NSW encourages all artists to enter, with finalists and semi-finalists exhibited at the Parliament of NSW, Sydney during June and July 2015.

The term ‘en plein air’ refers to the practice of painting outdoors, in direct engagement with nature, where the transitory effects of light can be observed and recorded. Contemporary Australian artists paint ‘en plein air’ both in the bush and the city. The NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize encourages artists to embrace the tradition and feel of ‘plein air’ to create new art works depicting subjects in the beautiful state of NSW. This is something that Sally embraces weekly on her regular “paint-outs”.
Plein air painting is an important part of any artist’s development. Sally explains “having done so much plein air work has allowed me to really understand light, and to develop a faster way of working and applying the paint. I used to labour over studio pieces, but now, in the studio, I focus and work as if on location, without time and try to recreate the energy.”
