Throughout 2015, the Gosford Regional Gallery sought expressions of interest from artists to put forward a creation or concept for a unique artwork. The gallery needed something special that would inspire and encourage visitor donations. Central Coast en plein air artist Graham Austin OAM was the selected artist and a 1.5m tall resin reproduction of his creative concept is now a permanent feature of the Gosford Regional Gallery foyer. It is a Koi G donation wishing well and encourages visitors to donate coins when they visit.

The work features three large, resin koi fish, inspired by the popular koi pond in the Galley’s beautiful Edogawa Commemorative [Japanese] Garden. Each fish forms a ‘G’ shape to represent both Gosford and Gallery. “I wanted Koi G to be immediately recognisable for children and adults. I have no doubt that the humble koi fish swimming in the Japanese gardens form one of the long lasting memories for Gallery visitors of all ages,” Austin explained.

According to the related press release, Gosford’s Chief Executive Officer Paul Anderson said the artwork demonstrates that each visitor donation plays an important role in the Gallery’s long-term sustainability and vision. “I’m sure people will want to visit and enjoy the new sculpture as well as discovering its sound and visual interactive elements.”

“I would like to congratulate Graham Austin whose work was chosen following a rigorous selection process including community feedback and public comment. I would also like to acknowledge the Foundation Trust for their generous support of this project,” he added.

About the Edogawa Commemorative Garden that inspired Graham Austin

In 1988, Gosford Regional Art Gallery formed a Sister City Agreement with Edogawa Japan. As a gift from Edogawa, the Edogawa Commemorative Garden was officially opened in September 1994 and has been designed in accordance to the original principles of the Japanese Heian (700AD) period.  The beautiful garden spans over 4,000m2. The garden is based on a traditional ‘shuyu’ (strolling style) garden, incorporating Japanese features. With meandering pathways, a roofed Japanese pavilion overlooking the Koi pond, raked dry stone garden and traditional Japanese teahouse, the garden offers a tranquil setting in which to relax and enjoy art and nature.
