Katarina Wells is exhibiting a series of beautiful sculptural vases at KAB Gallery. There are varying sizes and forms available. Each piece has been worked for days and cautiously fired for permanency. The works are elegant and soft, all inspired by her coastal surroundings on the east coast of NSW.

The primary components of porcelain are clays, feldspar or flint, and silica, all characterized by small particle size. To create different types of porcelain, Katarina combines these raw materials in varying proportions until they obtain the desired properties. Her sculpting technique is delicate, and it can take days to perfectly balance the form.

When looking at Katarina’s art it is easy to see her coastal reference. Each piece seems organic and evokes memories of coral, sea urchins and shark egg forms found along sandy beach shores. The shark egg pictured above is colloquially named “Mermaids Purses” and often collected by beachcombers. No two are the same and Katarina references the forms as part of her artmaking process.
