Over a decade of Art: Est. 2013

Josephine Townsend

Josephine Townsend is an Australian ceramic artist whose work explores the vibrant interplay of colour, form, and pattern. She has been a ceramicist for many years and is committed to her practice exploring a diverse range of techniques and series of vases, sculptures, wall art, jewellery, lighting and other functional beauties. Townsend also shares her expertise as a part-time ceramics teacher, inspiring others with her passion for making art.

My work is essentially tactile, my forms both sculptural and functional, are all made to be touched and handled. I build surfaces, colours and curves that invite the touch. I am inspired by the fact that forms and patterns repeat in nature. Tree roots branch out in the same way that rivulets run, flames flicker and branches divide. explains Josephine

Her current series at KAB Gallery, Dappled Splendour, draws inspiration from the spotted gum forests of the South Coast of NSW, capturing the intricate play of light and colour found in nature. This collection are all nerikomi. This is a technique where layered coloured porcelain is formed to create complex patterns. Two distinct blocks were used for the current pieces on display at our Terrigal art gallery. One featuring small, swirling patterns and the other with a more open and expressive design.
