Guy Morgan

Guy Morgan is an accomplished Australian artist whose practice moves effortlessly between portraiture, still life and landscape. While widely recognised for his achievements as a portrait painter, his work extends far beyond likeness, exploring memory, observation and the quiet significance of everyday scenes and objects. 

Working from Sydney Australia, Guy has established himself as one of Australia’s respected contemporary painters. His paintings have been selected for many of the country’s most prestigious art prizes, including the Archibald Prize, the Moran Prize and the Salon des Refusés. In 2015 he was one of only three artists selected as a finalist in both the Archibald Prize and the Moran Prize, an achievement that speaks to the strength and versatility of his practice. His work has also been recognised internationally, including being longlisted for the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Although portraiture has brought widespread recognition, Guy’s paintings are united by something deeper than subject matter alone. Whether depicting a treasured object, a familiar landscape or a quietly observed interior, he paints with sensitivity and restraint. His compositions are carefully considered, allowing colour, light and surface to carry much of the narrative. Rather than demanding attention, his works reveal themselves gradually, rewarding collectors who enjoy living with art that continues to unfold over time.

A defining characteristic of Guy’s practice is his ability to find significance in the ordinary. Guy’s artistic journey has also been shaped by resilience. Following a retinal detachment that permanently altered the vision in one eye, he adapted his practice rather than allowing it to define him. His experience has strengthened an already perceptive approach to painting and continues to inform the way he observes and interprets the world.

Beyond painting, Guy is an educator, author and advocate for the arts. He holds a Master of Studio Arts (Painting) from the Sydney College of the Arts, has served on its Academic Board, taught through the City of Sydney’s Pine Street Creative Arts Centre and contributed to arts advocacy through Arts Access Australia. His creative practice also extends into film and illustration, with his award winning short film Written with a finger on a steamed up window premiering at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia before screening internationally.

Today, Guy Morgan’s paintings are held in private collections throughout Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the United States. His work continues to attract collectors seeking original Australian art distinguished by intelligence, authenticity and enduring appeal.
