“Welcome back to the SCG” – depicts the 1st day of a cricket Test Match – Australia v’s West Indies on the 3rd January 1976. Geoff Thomson coming in to bowl to Michael Holding.

“Welcome Back to the SCG” – as Ritchie Benaud would famously say. It’s late in the day on the 3rd January 1976 and at 6 for 260 the game evenly poised. The crowd of 53,000 is engrossed in this tight battle. The famous SCG Hill is still so full that it appears no one has left the ground. Transistor radios are blaring out across many parts of “The Hill” tuned in to the 2SM sports commentary capturing all the bits of action you miss. The journey to get your shout of Swan Lager’s from the bar underneath the famous scoreboard is fraught with danger – finding your way back to your spot in the crowd but more importantly you don’t want to spill any of the precious amber liquid. The shadows of the players are getting longer. The umpire steadies, the fielders, frantically chewing their Wrigley’s Gum, slowly walk in as Jeff Thomson hits the crease to sling down another thunderbolt to Michael Holding. How good is summer!
