Original painting by Australian Artist Jo Waite.

George Street 1985

“Gone to Gowings”  Who remembers asking their Dad where Mum is? She’s “Gone to Gowings!” might have been the reply, rehashing the famous advertising line. It was a famous destination for men’s stuff, just down the road from another famous destination and meeting point – the Sydney Town Hall. Long before mobiles, texting or DM’s – you had to have your plan well sorted out just to meet up with others in Sydney and quite often it was meeting at the Town Hall steps. Jo Waite’s painting captures the detail of the famous architecture of the Town Hall and QVB, the city colour and the bustle of people rushing by this famous spot. Jo also captures that quiet contemplation of what looks to be a number of people patiently waiting for someone to arrive, as they people watch and keep an eye out for their friend. We just hope that friend didn’t miss their bus or train!
