Original oil painting by Sally West, created ‘en plein air’ at Berry’s Bay, NSW. Plein-Air (in the open air) refers to the practice of painting outdoors, in direct engagement with nature.

Many of the traditional Australian plein air paintings were referred to as “9 by 5s”, as they were often painted on compact and manageable 9inch x 5inch cigar box lids provided by Abrahams whose family imported cigars.

In an attempt to honour this fine Australian tradition, throughout the years, Sally West has visited many beautiful locations to paint 9 by 5 artworks (23cm x 13cm, approx). The experience of painting en plein air really allows the artist to capture something more than just the landscape, including the light and atmosphere of the day into the work.

Mounted and ready to frame (total artwork size including the mount is 34 x 42cm).
