If you are an Australian art collector, you are probably well acquainted with the work of Joseph Frost. Principally a maritime artist, Frost is famous for his detailed paintings of Sydney Harbour and boats. His full name is Joseph Ambrose Mraz (born Czechoslovakia 1953), he anglicized his name to Frost after his arrival in Australia in the 1970s. He has also painted under his pseudonym name Julian Morgan. Frost is recognised for his meticulous brushwork and extreme detail in his atmospheric paintings of morning or afternoon light on the water. KAB Gallery is currently exhibiting a miniature landscape of the view from Bradley’s Head (NSW).

This beautiful artwork by Frost, ”Stone Wharf – Bradley’s Head’  is a great example of his detailed gouache work and his love for the Sydney landscape. With the old sailing ship, Harbour Bridge and morning light this gouache on cedar panel painting is a most collectable piece.

Bradley’s Head is located in Sydney, on the northern part of the harbour [near Taronga Zoo]. It boasts spectacular views of Sydney Harbour, Fort Denison, Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.

THE FRAME:

‘Stone Wharf – Bradley’s Head’ is fully framed with special French Matting and ornate frame. The framing uses French Matting (an ancient technique using pale watercolour wash panels and drawn ink lines around the perimeter of a matted piece of art.) The lines and panels around the image draw the eye inwards, repeating the delicacy and contrasts of Frost’s precise artwork. It is a work so detailed it can trick the eye appearing to be a three dimensional embossing or photographic work.
