Jessica Sylvester; KAB Gallery’s Emerging Artist 2018

Exploring the limbo between reality and fantasy, Jessica Sylvester’s amazing ink illustrations conjure the awe & magic of a child’s vivid imagination. As the recent winner of KAB Gallery’s Emerging Artist Award there is no doubt that Jessica Sylvester is an Australian Illustrator to watch!

Her amazing original hand-drawn illustrations are drenched in detail and draw the viewer into a world full of wonder and mystery. Created using monochromatic inks on paper, Sylvester’s artworks feature charming characters inspired by stories from her niece and her own memories “…with a little bit of a twist!”  

In the original illustration The Girls, Sylvester draws from her own childhood memories to create a piece that emanates the magical feeling of sitting in the forest under the stars, sharing stories and memories with friends. Like her favorite artist, Shaun Tan, Sylvester’s illustrations are reminiscent of youth. She manages to capture a spirit of innocence & wonder through her artworks that exude a sense of refined simplicity.

Sylvester is currently working on an illustrated story of her own, “…with the hopes of turning it into a small series” as well as a variety of other projects that she is hoping to get published in the near future. We can’t wait to see what’s next for Jessica Sylvester and we have no doubt that KAB Gallery’s Emerging Artist has a bright future ahead!
